Overview

A social network built around presence, not a feed

Instead of scrolling to see what friends posted, users open a live map and see where their friends are in real time, interact with them, discover people and places nearby, and build communities around physical proximity. Tony Web Studio scoped, designed, and shipped the full MVP on a modern Angular and Laravel stack hosted on AWS.

In short: we built a complete location-based social networking web app with a live friend-location map at its core, surrounded by personal and business profiles, groups, events, native advertising, and live streaming — on AngularJS, Laravel, and AWS.
The Problem

A real-time social product is a hard MVP to ship

Traditional social networks are built around timelines — they tell you what people did, not where they are. Building the alternative meant solving three problems at once.

📍

Real-time location at the core

The entire premise depended on a live map showing friends' positions and updating continuously — technically demanding, requiring constant lightweight communication between many users and the server.

🧩

A broad feature set on an MVP budget

Profiles, business pages, groups, events, advertising, and live streaming are each substantial features. Delivering all of them coherently in a first version required disciplined scoping and a capable architecture.

📈

A foundation that could scale

An MVP that wins users has to survive its own success. The build needed to validate the concept fast while standing on infrastructure that could grow rather than be rebuilt.

🤝

Connection that drives real-world meeting

The product's value was spontaneous, in-person connection — so presence, discovery, and interaction all had to feel instant and effortless.

The Solution

A live map surrounded by everything that makes a network sticky

Tony Web Studio delivered a working web application that put an interactive, real-time map at the heart of the social experience. Explore the feature set by area.

  • Live social map — an interactive map showing friends' real-time locations as custom avatar markers, so users see who's nearby and connect in person.
  • Real-time engine — a WebSocket-based layer keeps locations and interactions live, updating continuously without manual refreshes.
  • Presence-first home — the map is the home screen — presence first, feed second.
  • Custom avatar markers — recognisable, personalised markers make the map readable at a glance.
  • Instant messaging signals — activity and messages surface in real time across the map.
  • Nearby discovery — find people, places, and activity in the immediate vicinity.
How It Was Built

Engineered to ship fast and scale later

The MVP was built to deliver a large feature set quickly while resting on infrastructure that could scale once the concept was validated.

AngularJS
Powers the front end as a dynamic single-page application, delivering the fast, fluid, app-like experience a live map and real-time interactions demand — handling continuous UI updates and complex views without page reloads.
Laravel (PHP)
Provides the back-end framework and a structured REST API handling authentication, profiles, groups, events, pages, and advertising — chosen for rapid, secure, maintainable development ideal for an MVP.
WebSockets
A socket-based real-time engine drives continuous location updates and live interactions, pushing data to clients instantly rather than polling — efficient enough to keep the live map responsive at scale.
Google Maps API
Handles mapping, geolocation, and custom marker rendering, plotting users and businesses accurately in real-world space.
AWS (EC2, RDS, S3)
Elastic, scalable hosting — EC2 for compute, RDS for the managed database, and S3 for media and image storage — giving the MVP a foundation that scales with user growth.
Media & streaming pipeline
Server-side media processing supports image uploads and live streaming, with AWS handling storage and delivery of user- and business-generated content.
The Results

A full social product, ready to validate and raise on

Tony Web Studio delivered a complete, working social MVP from concept to live web application — a live location map, personal and business profiles, business pages, groups, events, native advertising, and live streaming, all in one coherent product. Built on a scalable AngularJS, Laravel, and AWS foundation, the MVP demonstrates the full product vision and is ready to put in front of real users and investors.

Why It Matters

Ship the vision without over-building for a stage you're not at

This project shows how a complex, real-time social product can be taken from idea to a complete MVP without compromising the vision. By putting live location at the centre and pairing it with the profile, community, commerce, and content features that drive engagement — all on a scalable stack — Tony Web Studio delivered a platform ready to validate and present to investors. It's a model for shipping ambitious consumer-tech ideas fast while building on infrastructure that can grow with them.

FAQ

Common questions about building a social network MVP

How do you build a location-based social network?
A location-based social network is built around a real-time map rather than a feed. Tony Web Studio used AngularJS for the front end, Laravel for the API, WebSockets for live location updates, the Google Maps API for the map, and AWS for scalable hosting — combining presence, profiles, groups, events, ads, and live streaming in one platform.
What tech stack is best for a real-time social app MVP?
A real-time social MVP needs a responsive front end (AngularJS), a fast API framework (Laravel), a live data layer (WebSockets), mapping (Google Maps API), and scalable cloud hosting (AWS EC2, RDS, S3). This combination ships quickly while scaling with user growth.
How much can be included in a social media MVP?
More than most teams expect. This MVP shipped seven core feature sets — a live map, personal and business profiles, business pages, groups, events, native advertising, and live streaming — by scoping each feature tightly and building on a scalable architecture.
How long does it take to build a social network MVP?
With disciplined scoping and a proven stack, a feature-rich social MVP can be designed and shipped in weeks to a few months rather than the year-plus a full enterprise build would take.
